This laboratory focuses on the development of advanced electrical stimulation systems for restoring shoulder and arm function to persons with paralysis. The team of engineers and physicians use cutting edge musculoskeletal modeling techniques to conceive and evaluate new ways to control the arm in a natural and effective manner. These advances are then applied clinically using implantable devices, providing individuals with spinal cord injury and other disabilities with improved reaching and other functional tasks involving the arm and hand.

This clinical office is staffed by an expert team of engineers, physicians, and therapists as part of the Department of Orthopaedics. The research team studies methods to improve hand and arm function for persons with spinal cord injury, stroke, and other disabilities through electrical stimulation and orthopaedic surgical reconstruction. Clinical research projects are conducted in both inpatient and outpatient facilities.

Respiratory Physiology

This program focuses on restoration of respiratory muscle function using functional electrical stimulation techniques. The team of physicians and neuroscientists develop and assess methods of activating the expiratory muscles to restore an effective cough and methods of activating the inspiratory muscles to maintain ventilatory support in individuals with ventilator-dependent spinal cord injury. The team works to advance these methods to provide natural, physiological function of paralyzed muscles.
