FES Investigator Ahlam Salameh PhD Receives VA Rehabilitation Research & Development Career Development Award

The Cleveland FES Center congratulates Ahlam Salameh, PhD, MSc for receiving a Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research & Development (VA RR&D) Career Development Award for her project, “Myoelectrolytically controlled device in acute rehabilitation after stroke.”

Individuals with stroke experience a high amount of arm functional deficits despite receiving rehabilitation. Functional deficits can be improved by combining motor learning-based practice with innovative rehabilitative tools that target the neurophysiological mechanisms that guide the reorganization process in the brain early after stroke. Dr. Salameh’s project aims to explore the feasibility of implementing a myoelectrically controlled orthosis in the acute rehabilitation for people with severe arm deficit after stroke. This study will determine if adding such a technology will improve the clinical outcomes beyond the levels achieved by standard care.

Dr. Salameh joined the Brain Plasticity and NeuroRehabilitation Laboratory at the Cleveland FES Center in April 2019 as a Postdoctoral Fellow working under the mentorship of Svetlana Pundik, MD, MSc.
