The FES Center congratulates high school student researchers Ibada Chowdary and Manya Raina, who worked with the team of FES Associate Medical Director Aasef Shaikh MD, PhD, over the summer. The students, who attend Hathaway Brown School, recently received recognitions related to their research in Dr. Shaikh’s lab.
Chowdary received an award from the U.S. Air Force Award recognizing an outstanding science or engineering project. The research focused on visual search in Parkinson’s Disease patients. She presented her research at her high school’s poster session in May. The poster title: The Brain’s Search Engine: Revealing the Circuitry of Visual Scanning and Its Disruption in Parkinson’s Disease. Students are selected for this award based on the scientific quality of their research and for leadership in STEM.
Also in May, Raina earned 4th place in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the Translational Medical Science category. This international pre-collegiate competition awards cash prizes to the top four students in each of the 22 categories. Raina’s project was titled “A Promising Intervention: Dynamic Cycling Modulates Subthalamic Activity and Intra-Nuclear Connectivity in Parkinson’s Disease Patients with Deep Brain Stimulation.”
