Congratulations to FES Center Investigator Michael Fu, PhD, Staff Scientist in the MetroHealth Center for Rehabilitation Research and the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), who was awarded a $1.5 Million, 2-yr National Science Foundation (NSF) grant entitled “POSE: Phase 2: The COSMIIC Open-Source Neuromodulation Ecosystem.”
The goal of the project is to train researchers nationwide to use open-source Networked Neuroprosthesis technology that was invented by MetroHealth scientists P. Hunter Peckham, PhD, Kevin Kilgore, PhD, and Brian Smith. This NSF project will produce workshops, online tutorials, and benchtop development kits that will enable other scientists and engineers to more rapidly create new electrical stimulation interventions for conditions of the nervous system. A sustainable open-source ecosystem will also be established, consisting of a governance structure, technical and regulatory support, and contribution management systems.
Dr. Fu is Associate Professor of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering in the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Engineering (with secondary appointments in the Depts. of Biomedical Engineering, Computer and Data Sciences) and Associate Professor of PM&R at the CWRU School of Medicine. He is also affiliated with the Dept. of Veterans Affairs Cleveland Functional Electrical Stimulation Center and the Advanced Platform Technology Center.
Dr. Fu’s collaborators on this project include Nathan Makowski, PhD (Associate Professor of PM&R), Steve Majerus, PhD (Assistant Professor of ECSE) and MetroHealth engineers Chris Rexroth, BS, Dan Romano, BS, Jeremiah Ukwela, MS, and Jenna Daghstani, MS.
