FES Investigator Dennis Bourbeau Wins Funding to Study Device for Female Bladder Dysfunction after Spinal Cord Injury

Congratulations to FES Center Investigator Dennis Bourbeau PhD, who has been awarded NIH/NINDS Funding for “Noninvasive genital nerve stimulation to promote urinary continence for women with SCI.”

The project, which scored in the 5th percentile in its study section, aims to determine the effect of at-home genital nerve stimulation on bladder control in women with spinal cord injury and who experience related neurogenic bladder dysfunction.

Women with spinal cord injury typically struggle with neurogenic bladder dysfunction, which has significant adverse effects on health, dignity, independence, and participation in work and social activities. This project will advance a new device for administering noninvasive electrical stimulation in order to improve their bladder control.

Dr. Bourbeau’s team will design, develop and test a prototype at-home device that uses electrical stimulation as a treatment or remedy for bladder dysfunction. Researchers plan to determine the effect of at-home genital nerve stimulation on bladder control

Dr. Bourbeau is a biomedical engineer and researcher with the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System, where this study will take place. He is also Associate Professor with the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at MetroHealth System, and Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University.
