FES Investigator’s Poster Selected to Receive Travel Grant Award MDS Congress

Sinem Balta Beylergil, PhD and Aasef Shaikh, MD, PhD presented a poster entitled, “A machine learning approach to determine the important patient characteristics for tremor prevalence and tremor irregularity in dystonia” at the Movement Disorder Society (MDS) International Congress, October 5-9, 2018, in Hong Kong.

The poster was selected to receive a Travel Grant Award from the Society and chosen for a Guided Poster Tour. These tours are led by MDS Faculty to highlight the best posters that contribute to the mission and goals of the Society.As an investigator at the FES Center, Dr. Shaikh studies how Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) can be used to treat movement disorders.

Dr. Beylergil’s current research focuses on using DBS to modulate perception to restore motor functions in these disorders.

Both are also interested in using quantitative data and machine learning to assist with diagnosis and treatment decisions for patients with movement disorders.

The poster presentation at MDS focused on identifying the factors that affect the co-occurrence of dystonia and tremor and deciphering the relationship between these two debilitating movement disorders.
