Dr. Ronald G. Riechers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University and serves as Director of the Cleveland VA Headache Center of Excellence and Chief of Neurology Service at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center.
He earned his medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and completed his neurology residency and internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He is board certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Riechers is a founding member of the VHA Headache Centers of Excellence (HCoE), which now spans 18 VISN locations across the country, and has dedicated his career to providing quality, holistic headache care to Veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
As Medical Director of the Cleveland FES Center, he maintains focus on clinical problems relevant to patients and veterans, particularly the signature injuries of modern warfare — TBI and PTSD — and their potential treatment through electrical stimulation. He also serves as a Clinical Subject Matter Expert in Neurology for the VA Integrated Product Team for the VHA National PSAS Contract expansion of Electrotherapeutic Modality Devices for Treatment of Pain.

- Post-traumatic headache (PTH) management and prevention in active-duty service members and veterans
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and neurological rehabilitation
- Polytrauma care and clinical practice guidelines for mild TBI
- Functional electrical stimulation for neurological conditions in veterans
- Holistic and multimodal headache treatment approaches (pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic)
MAJOR PROJECTS & FUNDING
- Randomized controlled pilot trial of prazosin for prophylaxis of post-traumatic headaches in active-duty service members and veterans
- VISN 10 TBI/Polytrauma Community of Practice, ongoing data performance review and clinical guideline implementation
- VA Integrated Product Team, Clinical Subject Matter Expert for electrotherapeutic modality devices for pain treatment
