Knutson, Jayme, PhD

Dr. Jayme Knutson is Co-director of the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute and Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Case Western Reserve University.

His research interests are in the development and clinical evaluation of novel neuroprosthetic and neurotherapeutic devices to restore motor function in individuals with CNS paralysis.

Dr. Knutson has disclosed several inventions through his institution’s technology transfer process, including the development of contralaterally controlled neuromuscular stimulation as a therapy for post-stroke hemiplegia. Others include virtual games and neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy for post-stroke hemiplegia and percussive focal muscle vibration combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation for spasticity relief.

RESEARCH PROGRAMS

• Contralaterally controlled functional electrical stimulation (CCFES), a novel neurotherapeutic application of surface electrical stimulation aimed at helping stroke survivors recover voluntary hand function and ankle dorsiflexion.
• Combining CCFES with other neuromodulatory techniques such as non-invasive brain stimulation and custom hand therapy video games.
• Developing new treatments for muscle spasticity following neurological injuries
