Durand is Credited with Coining the Term ‘Neural Engineering’ |
The Cleveland FES Center congratulates principal investigator Dr. Dominique Durand, MD, PhD. Dr. Durand has received the 2024 North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS) Engineering Innovator Award.
Dr. Durand is professor of biomedical engineering and neurosciences and director of the Neural Engineering Center at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Among his many contributions to the field of neuroscience, Dr. Durand is the founding editor in chief of the Journal of Neural Engineering and served in that role through 2022.
The NANS Engineering Innovator Award recognizes an individual whose contributions in implementation, mechanisms and technology have profoundly impacted the field of neuromodulation, driving new science and therapy creation.
Keri Kramer, CEO of NANS, shared that the society solicits award nominations which are then reviewed by a committee. Dr. Durand stood out to the committee due to his lifetime of achievement in neural engineering. In selecting Dr. Durand, the committee remarked, “Dr. Durand is among the most respected neuronal engineers in the world. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Neural Engineering and is credited by some for even establishing the term ‘neural engineering’ itself. Many of the foundational principles used in the design of neuromodulation devices were co-developed by Dr. Durand, including foundational methods for simulating neuromodulation for device design.”
The honor is one of eight awards showcasing outstanding achievement in neuromodulation. NANS is set to present the award to Dr. Durand during its annual meeting, Jan. 18-24, 2024, in Las Vegas.
