Dr. Jayakumar Sahadevan is a Professor of Medicine and Director of Clinical Electrophysiology at Case Western Reserve University and the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Dr. Sahadevan is a cardiologist with specialist training in cardiac electrophysiology, with over two decades of clinical and research experience focused on the mechanisms and treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF).

Dr. Sahadevan’s group was among the first to perform high-density epicardial mapping of chronic AF in patients undergoing open heart surgery, producing seminal publications on the sources maintaining persistent AF. Over the past 20 years, his team has developed novel mapping technologies, including high-resolution electrode arrays and real-time analysis algorithms, to identify and target AF sources for ablation therapy.

His work spans persistent AF, postoperative AF, heart failure device epidemiology, and emerging ablation technologies such as pulsed field ablation (PFA). He has also undergone I-Corps commercialization training (Cleveland Clinic, by invitation) to advance the translation of a smart catheter technology developed in partnership with industry and supported by Ohio Third Frontier, CTSC, and NIH NCAI funding.

RESEARCH PROGRAMS

  • Mechanisms and mapping of persistent atrial fibrillation using high-density epicardial electrode arrays
  • Development and validation of novel real-time algorithms to detect AF-maintaining sources
  • Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF): reentrant mechanisms and non-pharmacologic treatment strategies
  • Pulsed field ablation (PFA) integrated with high-density mapping for targeted surgical ablation
  • Heart failure and cardiac device epidemiology, including CRT outcomes in wide-QRS populations
  • Metabolic therapy for atrial fibrillation
