{"id":29970,"date":"2024-05-20T10:55:56","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T10:55:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fescenter.org\/test\/?p=29970"},"modified":"2026-01-06T16:03:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T16:03:00","slug":"clarkson-university-honors-center-founder-hunter-peckham-with-doctor-of-science-degree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fescenter.org\/test\/2024\/05\/20\/clarkson-university-honors-center-founder-hunter-peckham-with-doctor-of-science-degree\/","title":{"rendered":"Clarkson University Honors Center Founder Hunter Peckham with Doctor of Science Degree"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>P. <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fescenter.org\/team\/investigators\/peckham-hunter-p-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hunter Peckham PhD<\/a>, founder and inaugural executive director of the Cleveland FES Center, was <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clarkson.edu\/news-events\/p-hunter-peckham-66-awarded-clarkson-university-honorary-degree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from Clarkson University<\/a>, Potsdam, N.Y., at the university\u2019s spring commencement on May 11.<\/p>\n<p>Peckham, a Clarkson alumnus, was honored for his lifelong commitment to innovative rehabilitation research benefitting civilians and veterans with spinal cord injuries, for his significant contributions to national rehabilitation research policy, and for his exceptional leadership of the biomedical and rehabilitation engineering community.<\/p>\n<p>Accepting the award, Peckham spoke about his time at Clarkson, the challenges he overcame, and the power of embracing uncertainty: \u201cThink back to when you first arrived at Clarkson\u2014has every semester panned out precisely as planned? Or did you find yourself someplace entirely unexpected? Do you find yourself grateful for the experiences\u2014good and bad\u2014that brought you to this arena? Rest assured, you will encounter uncertainty again and again throughout your lives. As uncomfortable as they may be in the moment, I have found that surprises often lead to the greatest gifts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peckham is Distinguished University Professor Emeritus, Donnell Institute Professor Emeritus and Professor of Biomedical Engineering Emeritus at <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/bme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Case Western Reserve University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Peckham is also founder of the Institute for Functional Restoration at Case Western Reserve University and co-director of the <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metrohealth.org\/rehabilitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute<\/a> at MetroHealth System in Cleveland. He has contributed to the development of implantable neural prostheses using electrical stimulation to reactivate neuromuscular function.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Peckham is leading a NIH-supported feasibility study of a clinical trial to implement a new networked neuroprosthesis technology to restore hand function after spinal cord injury.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;] P.
