Existing alternatives are limited, but the body of work in this area is accelerating.<\/p>\n<p>Neuroprostheses are a promising method for significant gain in hand and arm function, and much of the Center&#8217;s research in this area includes use of various types of implantable platforms, sometimes combined with brain computer interface devices, to stimulate, sense and control movement of the arm and\/or hand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"hero-image\" aria-label=\"Primary image\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/fescenter.org\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Main-Image_UpperExtremity_edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Main-Image_UpperExtremity.jpg placeholder\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"upper-ext-section-heading\">Overview of SCI &#8211; Upper Extremity Studies<\/h3>\n<p>FES Center investigators are currently managing multiple clinical trials related to restoring function after spinal cord injury (SCI). This work includes the study of moving the arm under the power of one&#8217;s own brain, regaining sensory feedback in the hand or upper extremity, and using a neuroprosthesis to regain hand and arm function.
