My research interests focus on improving the quality of life of patients who have suffered spinal cord injury through research in the underlying mechanisms of bladder and bowel dysfunction.

Dr. Hoey began his career by receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Canisius University followed by obtaining his PhD in behavioral neuroscience from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow under Dr Charles Hubscher focusing on bladder, bowel, and sexual function after spinal cord injury in an animal model. His expertise in bladder and bowel function is now being applied to investigate interventions in humans that focus on reducing urinary and fecal incontinence to improve the quality of life after injury.

Research interests include: CNS injury and recovery of function; bowel and bladder function after injury; using electrical stimulation to improve function after injury; tract tracing; opioid mechanisms; animal behavior; motivated behavior; reproductive physiology; endocrinology; pain and analgesia; autism.
