Restoration of Hand Function in Cervical SCI
This study aims to evaluate the KeyGrip investigational device for restoration of hand function for people with spinal cord injury.
Researchers at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, are conducting a study of a small, implanted device called “KeyGrip” to activate paralyzed muscles to provide hand grasp in patients with spinal cord injury.
To qualify for the study, participants must be older than 18 years of age, have a spinal cord injury that occurred at least 6 months ago, have an injury level between C1-C8, and have no other neurological defects.
What is Involved?
- Evaluation of the prospective participant’s arm and hand muscle excitability to confirm eligibility
- Testing of the prospective participant’s hand function at baseline and post treatment
- A 60-minute procedure to implant the KeyGrip device in the participant’s forearm
- Exercise to develop hand grasp strength
- Training in use of the KeyGrip system for functional activities that the participant identifies
- Follow-up visits at 3-, 6-, and 12 months
