Title Antidromic Pulse Generating Wave Form for Collision Blocking
Description An electrode cuff (B) including a dielectric sleeve (10) and an annular cathode electrode (20) is disposed around a nerve trunk (A). An anode electrode (22) is disposed in body fluids in electrical communication with the nerve trunk. The cathode electrode is disposed off center within the dielectric sleeve. The flow of electric current from the anode to the cathode has a much greater amplitude along the nerve in the direction extending along the nerve trunk toward the cathode from the end of the dielectric sleeve toward which the cathode electrode is closest. A signal generator (C) applies a pulse train across the anode and cathode electrodes. The pulse train includes a plurality of alternating first amplitude pulse portions (40) and opposite polarity pulse portions (42). Each first polarity pulse includes a sharp leading edge (50) which rises abruptly to a preset amplitude (52). A trailing edge (56) of each first pulse portion decays smoothly into a leading edge (60) of each opposite polarity pulse portion without a discontinuity therebetween. The opposite polarity pulse portion has an amplitude (62) which is smaller than the triggering amplitude and a duration which is longer than the first polarity pulse portion duration. The amplitude and duration of the first and opposite polarity pulse portions are selected such that the net charge transfer in each direction is substantially the same.

Title Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation System
Description An input command controller (A) provides logic function selection signals and proportional signals. The signals are generated by movement of a ball member (12) and socket member (14) relative to two orthogonal axes. When the joystick is implanted, a transmitter (50) transmits the signals to a patient carried unit (B). The patient carried unit includes an amplitude modulation algorithm such as a look-up table (124), a pulse width modulation algorithm (132), and an interpulse interval modulation algorithm (128). The algorithms derive corresponding stimulus pulse train parameters from the proportional signal which parameters are transmitted to an implanted unit (D). The implanted unit has a power supply (302) that is powered by the carrier frequency of the transmitted signal and stimulation pulse train parameter decoders (314, 316, 318). An output unit (320) assembles pulse trains with the decoded parameters for application to implanted electrodes (E). A laboratory system (C) is periodically connected with the patient carried unit to measure for changes in patient performance and response and reprogram the algorithm accordingly. The laboratory system also performs initial examination, set up, and other functions.

Title Slowly Penetrating Interfascicular Nerve Cuff Electrode and Method of Using
Description A self-curling sheet of a non-conductive material is biased to curl into a tight cylinder. Inwardly extending conductive members are disposed on the surface of the sheet forming the inside of the cylinder. Circumferentially separated longitudinal slices are made in the cylinder adjacent the conductive members forming spring members such that, as the sheet relaxes over time, the electrodes on the spring members engage and pierce a nerve surrounded by the cuff. The conductive segments may be electrically conductive for applying electrical impulses or fluid conductive for infusing medications. In use, a first edge of the self-curling sheet is disposed adjacent a nerve trunk which is to receive the cuff therearound. The self-curling sheet is controllably permitted to curl around the nerve into its original cylindrical shape. Over a period of a few days, electrodes riding on spring members formed by longitudinal slices into the cylinder are embedded in the nerve without damage to the perineurium membrane surrounding the nerve axons. The electrodes displace the fascicles rather than damaging them by piercing the perineurium.

Description Asymmetric charge-balanced stimulation waveforms are defined and used for CNS stimulation with selective stimulation of either neuronal cell bodies or axon fibers of passage in favor of the other. The pre-pulse and stimulation pulse are charge-balanced to prevent tissue damage and electrode corrosion. The polarity of the pre-pulse and stimulation pulse control the selectivity of stimulation with respect to neuronal cell bodies versus axon fibers of passage. The waveform used in the stimulation method optionally includes a zero-amplitude phase having a duration of 0 to 500 microseconds.

Description Systems and methods for blocking nerve impulses use an implanted electrode located on or around a nerve. A specific waveform is used that causes the nerve membrane to become incapable of transmitting an action potential. The membrane is only affected underneath the electrode, and the effect is immediately and completely reversible. The waveform has a low amplitude and can be charge balanced, with a high likelihood of being safe to the nerve for chronic conditions. It is possible to selectively block larger (motor) nerve fibers within a mixed nerve, while allowing sensory information to travel through unaffected nerve fibers.

Title Flat Interface Nerve Electrode
Description A flat interface nerve electrode is provided along with a method for its use. The electrode provides a plurality of conductive elements embedded in a non-conductive cuff structure, which acts to gently and non-evasively redefine the geometry of a nerve through the application of a force so as to apply pressure to a nerve in a defined range, namely from 2 to 40 mmHG and more preferably from 15 to 30 mmHG and most preferably from 15 mmHG to 20 MMHG. This range is selected to minimize the reduction of blood flow within the tissue, which preferably is at least 70% of the initial value, more preferably 90% of the initial value. The cuff has an opening, which is elongated relative to the diameter of the nerve to which it is applied. Preferably, the cuff is constructed from an elastic bio-compatible material having top and bottom beam members configured to define a nerve opening. The cuff is open at one side and has a connection at the other side which results in a spring force being applied through the surfaces of the nerve opening to the subject nerve. During implantation the open sides of the cuff are closed so as to capture the nerve in the cuff. As the nerve is reshaped, specific nerve axons become more easily addressed through the epineurium by the embedded conductive elements.

Title Strain Gauge and Method of Making and Using The Same
Description A strain gauge primarily designed for dynamic measurements and requiring very little force to produce a change in length. The strain gauge is alternately concave and convex in shape, such as a sinusoidal curve with nodes of low resistance on the convex portions and strain gauges of high resistance on the concave portions. The gauge is unbonded and can be stretched with very little force. The strain gauge is utilized in an instrument to monitor infant respiration and detect episodes of apnea.

Title Double Helix Functional Stimulation Electrode
Description First and second electrical wires (10), (12) are wrapped helically around a polyprolene core (22). Along a single helical portion (A), a sheath (24) is placed over the spiral wound wires and core. In an open double helix portion (B), the core with spiral wound wires is wrapped into an open helix. At an electrical stimulation portion (C), insulation is removed from the wires such that bare conductors (14), (16) are wrapped spirally around the core. The core with the spiral wrapped conductors is wrapped in an open helix. A plurality of barbs (32) are mechanically connected along the entire length of the exposed electrical conductor surface. The core extends beyond the end of the electrical conductor surface to facilitate insertion into a selected site with a cannula (64).

Title Subcutaneous Electrode For Stimulating Skeletal Musculature
Description A subcutaneously implantable device is provided for either electrically stimulating skeletal musculature or sensing electrical potential at its surface without directly contacting the musculature. The implantable device comprises an electrode constructed from a single generally planar sheet of electrically conductive material and having a first surface adapted to face the skeletal musculature and an opposite surface adapted to face away from the skeletal musculature. A flexible casing covers at least a substantial portion of the opposite surface of the electrically conductive sheet. At least one electrical lead is attached at one end to the electrically conductive sheet and is attachable at an opposite end to an electrical current source. The generally planar electrically conductive sheet is preferably comprised of a noble metal, such as platinum, and has a surface area sufficiently large to distribute the charge required to stimulate the targeted muscle. The electrical leads are preferably constructed from lengths of stranded stainless steel wire which are coiled in helical fashion to increase their capacity for elongation.
